Growing in faith
&
Walking in Christ's Path
Our Journey
A Humble Beginning
Elder Harris worked at Georgia-Pacific in Louisville, Mississippi. Before going to work each morning, after work in the evenings, and on his days off, he faithfully worked on building the church. He used lumber from old houses that were being torn down, and whenever he received his paycheck, he purchased the additional lumber and building materials he needed.
With the help of two young boys, Stanley Harrington and Clyde Harrington, the church building gradually became a reality.
In the early years, the church had an outdoor restroom and no running water. Even so, the congregation faithfully gathered for Sunday School, Sunday worship services, and revivals. Elder Harris remained committed because he believed this church was a vision God had given him.
As time passed, the membership continued to grow, and the ministry flourished. Today, the legacy of Elder Isaiah Harris still stands as a testimony of his faith, hard work, and obedience to God.
Strengthening Our Roots
In 1995, Elder R. D. Murry was appointed Pastor of Gates of Joy Church of God in Christ, where he has faithfully served ever since. At the time of his appointment, the district had been reorganized as District 12, where Elder Isaac Harris served as District Superintendent.
Under Elder Murry’s leadership, Gates of Joy has experienced both spiritual and physical growth. Shortly after assuming the pastorate, he led the congregation through its first major renovation. In 2000, with the help of two faithful deacons and members of the surrounding community, a new church building was constructed, providing a permanent place of worship for the congregation.

Gates of Joy Church of God in Christ was founded by Elder Isaiah Harris. The first church services were held in his home on D. B. Williamson Road in Louisville, Mississippi.
Later, Elder James Young and his wife, Mother Addie Young, came from New York to visit Mississippi. Elder Young suggested that the services be moved to the home of Sister Willie Cooper. The congregation gathered under a large shade tree, where chairs were placed to accommodate everyone who attended.
Some of the original members included Mildred Harrington, Marie Carter, James Harrington, Pauline Harrington, Stanley Harrington, and Clyde Harrington.
After Elder James Young returned to New York, Elder Isaiah Harris continued holding services at his home. As God blessed the ministry, Elder Harris began building a church. He often said that the Lord had given him the blueprint for the building.
Expanding the Vision
The entire Gates of Joy Church family, remain committed to carrying on the vision that God gave to Elder Harris. They continue to honor his legacy by keeping the doors of the church open and proclaiming the Gospel of Jesus Christ for generations to come.
The next pastor was Elder James Young. He later moved back to Mississippi and was very familiar with the early development of the Gates of Joy Church. He was a man of God with a mission to keep the church holy and moving forward.
